Using Proton Pass

In this article, we show you how to install the Proton Pass Linux app for Debian and Ubuntu-based distributions (DEB) and Fedora and Red Hat-based distributions (RPM).

If you have a paid Proton Pass plan, the Linux app allows you to access your items offline. If you want to save and autofill logins directly in your browser, you can use our browser extensions for:

  • Chrome
  • Brave
  • Firefox

Learn how to set up the Proton Pass browser extension(new window)

You can also access Proton Pass on your Linux desktop using the Pass web app(new window) (inside a browser window).

How to install and set up the Proton Pass Linux app

1. Sign up for a Proton Pass account. If you use any other Proton service (such as Proton Mail, Proton VPN, or Proton Drive), you automatically have a Proton Pass account. Just sign in with your existing Proton Account username and password.

2. On Debian and Ubuntu (and most distros based on these), download the DEB file. On Fedora and Red Hat-based distributions, download the RPM file.

3. Confirm the package’s integrity. You can verify its checksum on Debian and Ubuntu-based distros with the following command:

echo "<SHA512CheckSum> ProtonPass.deb" | sha512sum --check -

On Fedora and Red Hat-based distros, run:

echo "<SHA512CheckSum> ProtonPass.rpm" | sha512sum --check -

To find the SHA512CheckSum for the latest version of this package, open this JSON file(new window) in a text editor

4. Open a terminal window in the directory you downloaded the file to (typically ~/Downloads). On Debian and Ubuntu-based distros, run:

sudo dpkg -i ProtonPass.deb

On Fedora and Red Hat-based distros, run:

sudo rpm -i --force ProtonPass.rpm

5. Open Proton Pass and sign in with your Proton Account username and password (and 2FA code(new window) if you’ve enabled it).

The Proton Pass Linux app

If you’ve used a password manager before, the first thing you’ll probably want to do is import your logins from it.

And that’s it! You can now easily access your saved passwords, notes, hide-my-email aliases, and credit card details from the convenience of a desktop app.

How to update the app

When an update is available, we’ll let you know via an in-app notification. To update the app, simply download the latest DEB or RPM file and install it as described above. There’s no need to uninstall the existing app.
